CBD is on everyone’s lips and is one of the best-known cannabinoids of the hemp plant. But it is not alone; cannabigerol is also found in a good full-spectrum oil. CBG is another cannabinoid of the hemp plant and brings several advantages. It has been increasingly recognized for some time now, so we are including it in our CBD guide and want to inform you about it. Find out what the benefits of cannabigerol are, how it is used, and why customers swear by this active ingredient.
Difference between CBD and CBG - explained simply
Science has not yet succeeded in fully deciphering all the components of the hemp plant. Although CBD and CBG are known, CBD is far better researched than cannabigerol. Nevertheless, CBG is one of the more popular cannabinoids due to its various described effects. Cannabigerol can only be extracted from the hemp plant at certain times because it is a precursor to CBD and THC. Older hemp plants have a very low CBG content because the cannabigerol has been converted into THC or CBD.
Therefore, growing a cannabis plant to obtain cannabigerol must be done with different considerations. A high CBG content means that the cannabinoid CBD is not present in large quantities. This explains the relatively high price of CBG products, as the hemp must be grown separately and under special conditions. But is the phytocannabinoid worth it at all? In fact, many users report positive effects, but they have not yet been officially proven.
The Production of Cannabigerol - Young Hemp Plants are Important
To obtain CBD and THC, hemp must reach a certain maturity. For the extraction of cannabigerol, mainly young plants, averaging six weeks old, are harvested. Using CO2 extraction (the gentlest method), the cannabinoid is obtained in crystal form. Other forms of extraction are not suitable, as the CBG would otherwise be converted into CBD. Using cannabigerol as an extract is theoretically possible but practically unaffordable. Therefore, after extraction, it is dissolved in a carrier oil, usually MCT oil. The CBG is then bottled with a pipette to dose the individual drops as accurately as possible.
How Does CBG Oil Affect the Endocannabinoid System?
It is known that cannabinoids like CBD affect the endocannabinoid system. Cannabigerol, however, interacts predominantly with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the human body. This is already familiar from classic CBD hemp oil, but cannabigerol can dominate in terms of strength. The main difference lies in the interaction with individual receptors. CBD primarily interacts with the CB2 receptor, which is responsible for pain perception, among other things. Cannabigerol, on the other hand, also strongly affects the CB1 receptor, which can influence a person’s well-being.
Can CBG Oil Offer Health Benefits?
Unfortunately, there are not many studies on the benefits of cannabigerol yet, so its effects can only be declared based on anecdotal evidence so far. However, available information shows that while the endocannabinoid system is not as strongly targeted, the bioavailability in the receptor area is high. This is one of the strengths of cannabigerol, as it can act quite directly and quickly.
In Italy, general studies on the benefits of cannabinoids were completed in 2014. In an investigation with mice, evidence suggested that CBG could have positive effects on cancer cell growth. In the animals, cell growth was inhibited. Whether this can also be applied to humans in practice has not yet been proven.
Furthermore, cannabigerol seems to have an influence on pain. Again, there are only animal experiment experiences so far. Mice suffering from long-term neuropathic pain were treated with cannabigerol. It was found that the properties of CBG could alleviate the pain. Therefore, it is conceivable that humans could also benefit from this in a similar way.
Combining CBG Oil and CBD Oil?
The benefits of CBD oil have been reported for many years. Its effect on the body’s endocannabinoid system is the focus of research. But can CBG oils be combined with CBD? The answer is clearly yes, as the interaction of various cannabinoids plays an important role in effectiveness. CBD oil is most often used as a full-spectrum oil. This means that, in addition to CBD extract, other cannabinoids like CBG, CBC, and others are also included. Each individual cannabinoid exhibits its own strengths, leading to enhanced effects.
This combination is crucial for the entourage effect, which results from the interaction of cannabinoids in full-spectrum oils. Additionally, the existing terpenes also have positive effects and play a role in the application. Pure hemp extract from CBD has a significantly lower effect on the body compared to full-spectrum products.
Therefore, it makes perfect sense to combine cannabigerol with CBD, as the two cannabinoids complement each other and enhance the overall efficacy of the hemp plant.
Does CBG Oil Make You High?
One of the advantages of CBD is that despite its strong effects, there is no psychoactive effect. The body and mind remain fully functional, with no state of intoxication affecting perception. Since CBD and CBG have similar effects, a high is not expected here either. There is currently no evidence that the cannabinoid CBG can cause a “high” feeling. On the contrary, there are even findings suggesting that CBG can partially counteract the psychoactive effects of THC. However, as both cannabinoids do not or only minimally occur in the same hemp plant, there is no direct evidence for this yet.
Is CBG Oil a Legal Alternative to CBD Oil?
The active ingredient CBG is legal in Germany (and Europe). There is much discussion about its effects, with users reporting positively, but research is still in its early stages. The evaluation of CBG as an alternative to CBD shows that combinations are more likely to be considered. The effects of the two cannabinoids are fundamentally different. Both components of hemp have positive influences on well-being. Therefore, combining them could potentially better harness the benefits of the hemp plant.
What Do People Use CBG Oil For and How Does It Work?
CBG works differently than CBD but is also believed to have positive properties for the human body. Currently, we only know what numerous consumers use CBG for. The following properties of the cannabinoid are utilized:
- Reduction of Sleep Disorders: A large number of people regularly suffer from sleep disorders, including difficulties falling asleep, nightmares, and restlessness at night. One of CBG’s strengths is its calming effect on the central nervous system. According to numerous users, sleep problems can therefore be reduced.
- Mental Health Issues: According to anecdotal reports, CBG oils can alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety disorders, and other mental health issues. CBD is also attributed with similar effects. Therefore, the combination of the two cannabinoids seems particularly beneficial for many affected individuals.
- Lack of Appetite: Unlike CBD, CBG oils are not known for reducing appetite. Instead, they have similar properties to THC. The cannabinoid is known for increasing appetite. Studies in mice have shown the same effect with CBG. This could benefit people suffering from lack of appetite and weight loss.
- Positive Effects on the Skin: The use of CBG for skin conditions is highly praised. Whether it’s rosacea, psoriasis, or acne, CBG oil in higher concentrations is said to be able to reduce symptoms.
In What Dosage Should CBG Oil Be Used?
Less is known about CBG than about CBD. You may know that using CBD oil always follows a “trial-and-error” approach. There are no dosage recommendations for CBG or CBD oils; you have to find out for yourself which amount works best for you. Most users use CBG oil similarly to CBD.
To avoid unwanted side effects, it is advisable to start dosing CBG products very slowly. Initially, one drop of oil is sufficient and can then be gradually increased. Hemp is very potent, but how the products affect each individual varies. Needs also differ with CBD oil. Some people report strong effects from a small amount of CBD oil, while others need a significantly higher dose.

Fundamentally, CBG is a natural product. Modern natural medicine is known for having fewer strong side effects, though they are not excluded.
While CBG oil may not be considered traditional natural medicine, it is an organic product from the plant world. Side effects mainly occur when you use large quantities of the product directly.
